Essential Discussions for Truth & Reconciliation
Feb 09, 2021 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

You are invited to participate in a life-changing education and awareness workshop on Essential Discussions for Truth and Reconciliation.

Registration deadline is January 29th

  • Click link or copy to your browser: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/essential-discussions-for-truth-and-reconciliation-tickets-133858035989

Hosted by the Honouring Indigenous Peoples (HIP) committees of the Rotary Clubs of Downtown Winnipeg and Transcona and with financial support from the Vickar Automotive Group, this two-part virtual workshop will mark the beginning of a new perspective. Here you will learn about the true, proud and resilient history of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples in Canada and the traumatic experience of colonization. Your broadened view will enable you to build new and stronger relationships in your community, improve service to the community you serve, and work effectively with First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples while creating new opportunities.

  • When: Two-session Virtual Workshop via Zoom on February 9th and 11th from 9:30am to Noon.
  • Cost: $50 per person
  • Registration: Space is limited, so register online now at the link below to secure your Zoom chair.
  • Trainer & Facilitator: Jessica Dumas Coaching and Training. Jessica has served as Chairperson of the Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce and was the first Indigenous Female Chairperson of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.  She is a member of the City of Winnipeg Mayor’s Indigenous Advisory Circle, The Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg and The CentrePort Advisor Committee and the Manitoba Museum Board of Governors. Jessica has been recognized for her professional expertise through nominations as a finalist in the CBC’s Top 40 Manitoban’s under 40 for 2015 and a finalist for 2017 Future Leaders of Manitoba, Jessica’s volunteer contributions have gained her wide respect within Manitoba.
  • Session 1: Focused presentations and group discussions on the timeline of the (TRC) Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, (IRS) Indian Residential Schools, the Indian Act, impacts of the Indian Act, and more. This session allows participants to gain a deeper understanding of government strategies and how they have created the social situations in which we see today. This session promotes conversations between participants to allow practicing the thought process in the reconciliation dialogue which is very important for leaders. Q & A.
  • Session 2: This session will focus on understanding who are the members of Treaty 1 Territory (Or Manitoba Region) and the Red River Metis Nation with regards to population and economic engagement, an understanding of the concept of Treaties and Treaty Acknowledgement, as well as the social challenges we see today and what we can do about them. Q&A.

Only by respecting history can we achieve a shared understanding of the present, enabling the exploration of a prosperous, equitable and sustainable future, together. Stay tuned for other Rotary HIP hosted opportunities this spring and fall to continue your journey through Circles for Reconciliation.

Miigwech, Thank you, Merci,

Darren Swanson, Ingrid Dowan
